Ingredients

For the Crispy Oat Topping:

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 5 tablespoons cold butter, cubed

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6 large apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons apple juice or water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9×9 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add apple juice and mix gently. Transfer to prepared baking dish.
  3. In another bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt for topping. Add cold butter pieces and work with fingers until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Sprinkle topping evenly over apples. Bake 50-55 minutes until golden brown and apples are tender.
  5. Cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Choose firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp that hold their shape when baked
  • Keep butter cold for the crispiest topping texture
