Homemade Apple Dumplings with Sweet Cider Glaze

  • Author: Amelia Bryan
  • Total Time: 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Yield: 8 dumplings

Description

Apple Dumplings take me straight back to my grandma’s kitchen, cozy baked apples wrapped in pastry and bubbling in a sweet cinnamon sauce.

Ingredients

Cider Sauce:

  • 2½ cups apple cider
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt

Dumplings:

  • 1 double pie crust recipe
  • 8 medium tart apples, peeled and cored
  • 8 tablespoons butter, softened
  • ⅔ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¾ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger

Instructions

  1. Make sauce by combining cider, sugar, and butter in saucepan. Boil, then simmer 8 minutes. Stir in vanilla and salt. Set aside.
  2. Preheat oven to 375°F. Butter a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  3. Roll pastry into 20×16-inch rectangle. Cut into 8 squares.
  4. Mix brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger in small bowl.
  5. Fill each cored apple with 1 tablespoon butter and 1 tablespoon spice mixture.
  6. Wrap each apple in pastry square, sealing edges with water. Place in baking dish.
  7. Pour sauce around dumplings. Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes.
  8. Remove foil and bake 20-25 minutes until golden brown and sauce bubbles.

Notes

Test doneness by inserting knife into apple – should slide through easily. Let rest 10 minutes before serving for best texture.
