Description

A simple, savory, and sweet side dish made by steaming a whole onion in the microwave and seasoning it with ponzu and bonito flakes.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Tbsp shaved bonito flakes
  • 1 whole yellow onion (approx 250g)
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp ponzu sauce

Instructions

  1. Peel the onion thoroughly and trim both the root and top ends so it sits flat. Use a sharp knife to cut a cross shape into the top, going about halfway down the onion to ensure even heat distribution.
  2. Place the onion in a microwave-safe bowl and cover it loosely with plastic wrap or a lid. Microwave on medium power (500-600W) for 4 to 6 minutes until the onion is tender and translucent.
  3. Remove the bowl carefully from the microwave to avoid steam burns. Drizzle the onion immediately with the ponzu and soy sauce, then top with the bonito flakes before serving warm.

Notes

If you don’t have ponzu, you can use a mix of soy sauce and a little lemon juice.
