Description
Golden, tender apple sticks with a light crispy coating and warm cinnamon sugar that melts on your tongue.
Ingredients
- Oil for frying (about 2 cups)
- 4 medium Granny Smith apples, cut into ¼-inch sticks
- ⅓ cup cornstarch
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- Caramel sauce for dipping (optional)
Instructions
- Heat oil to 350°F in a heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat, about 8 minutes.
- Cut apples into ¼-inch thick sticks, leaving skin on.
- Place cornstarch in a shallow bowl. Mix sugar and cinnamon in another bowl.
- Dredge apple pieces in cornstarch, shaking off excess.
- Fry in batches for 90 seconds to 2 minutes until golden brown.
- Remove with slotted spoon and drain briefly on paper towels.
- Roll hot apple fries in cinnamon sugar mixture.
- Serve immediately with caramel sauce.
Notes
- Don’t overcrowd the pan when frying – work in small batches
- Oil temperature is crucial – too hot and they burn, too cool and they get soggy
- Honeycrisp or Gala apples work well as alternatives to Granny Smith
